Medical Detoxification
The safest, most comfortable way to begin your recovery. Our medical detox program provides 24/7 physician-supervised care to manage withdrawal symptoms and stabilize your health before transitioning into treatment.
What Is Medical Detox?
Medical detoxification is the process of safely removing addictive substances from the body under close medical supervision. At NPZ in Ventura, our detox program is staffed around the clock by physicians, registered nurses, and clinical specialists who monitor vital signs, manage withdrawal symptoms, and administer FDA-approved medications to ensure your comfort and safety.
Detox is not a standalone treatment for addiction -- it is the essential first step that prepares your body and mind for the therapeutic work ahead. Attempting to detox without medical support can be dangerous and even life-threatening, particularly with alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids.
The Detox Process
Our medically supervised detox program typically lasts 3 to 7 days, depending on the substance, duration of use, and individual health factors. The process includes:
- Comprehensive intake assessment -- medical history, substance use evaluation, mental health screening, and lab work
- Individualized detox protocol -- medications and interventions tailored to your specific withdrawal risks
- 24/7 medical monitoring -- continuous vital sign tracking, symptom management, and emergency readiness
- Comfort care -- nutritional support, hydration therapy, sleep assistance, and anxiety management
- Seamless transition planning -- coordinated handoff to residential or outpatient treatment upon stabilization
Substances We Treat
Our medical team is experienced in managing withdrawal from a wide range of substances, including:
- Alcohol
- Opioids (prescription painkillers, OxyContin, Vicodin)
- Heroin
- Fentanyl and synthetic opioids
- Prescription drugs (sedatives, stimulants, sleep aids)
- Cocaine and crack cocaine
- Methamphetamine and amphetamines
- Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Klonopin)
- Marijuana and cannabis products
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
NPZ utilizes FDA-approved medications as part of our evidence-based detox protocols. Medication-assisted treatment helps reduce cravings, manage withdrawal symptoms, and lower the risk of relapse. Common MAT medications used during detox include Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone), naltrexone, and other physician-prescribed interventions. MAT is always combined with behavioral therapy and counseling for comprehensive care.
Residential Treatment
Our residential treatment program immerses you in a structured, supportive environment where you can focus entirely on healing -- free from the triggers and stressors of everyday life.
30, 60, and 90-Day Programs
NPZ offers flexible residential treatment programs of 30, 60, or 90 days to match the severity of your addiction, your personal circumstances, and your long-term recovery goals. Research consistently shows that longer stays in residential treatment produce better outcomes, lower relapse rates, and more sustainable life changes. Our clinical team will recommend the program length best suited to your needs during your initial assessment.
What to Expect
During residential treatment at NPZ, you will live on-site at our Ventura facility and participate in a full daily schedule of therapeutic activities. You will have a private or semi-private room, nutritious chef-prepared meals, and access to our campus amenities. Our programming combines evidence-based clinical approaches with holistic wellness practices to treat the whole person -- mind, body, and spirit.
Therapy Approaches
Our residential program integrates multiple therapeutic modalities, including:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) -- identify and change negative thought patterns driving addictive behavior
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) -- build distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills
- Motivational Interviewing (MI) -- strengthen personal motivation and commitment to change
- Trauma-Informed Care -- safely process past trauma that may contribute to substance use
- Family Therapy -- rebuild trust, improve communication, and heal family dynamics
- Group Counseling -- peer support, accountability, and shared learning in facilitated group settings
- Holistic Therapies -- mindfulness meditation, yoga, art therapy, fitness training, and nutritional counseling

Outpatient Programs
Our outpatient programs provide high-quality addiction treatment with the flexibility to maintain your daily responsibilities. Step down from residential care or begin here if your clinical needs allow.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Our PHP is the most intensive outpatient option, designed for clients who need structured, daily treatment but do not require 24-hour residential supervision. The program typically lasts 2 to 4 weeks and involves attending our Ventura facility 5 to 6 days per week for 5 to 6 hours per day. PHP is ideal for clients stepping down from residential treatment or those whose clinical assessment indicates a need for intensive daytime programming.
PHP programming includes individual therapy, group counseling, psychiatric evaluations, medication management, psychoeducation, and relapse prevention planning. Clients return home or to a sober living environment in the evenings.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our IOP provides a structured treatment experience while accommodating work, school, and family commitments. The program runs 8 to 12 weeks and involves 3 to 5 sessions per week, each lasting 3 hours. IOP is appropriate as a step-down from PHP, following residential treatment, or as a primary treatment for clients with moderate addiction severity.
IOP sessions include process groups, cognitive behavioral therapy, relapse prevention workshops, life skills development, family education, and peer support. Morning and evening session times are available to fit diverse schedules.
Standard Outpatient Program
Standard outpatient care is designed for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery who benefit from ongoing therapeutic support. Sessions meet 1 to 2 times per week and focus on relapse prevention, coping skill reinforcement, accountability, and long-term recovery planning. This level of care is often sustained for several months to a year or more.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment
Nearly half of individuals with a substance use disorder also experience a co-occurring mental health condition. At NPZ, we treat both simultaneously through our integrated dual diagnosis program.
Understanding Dual Diagnosis
Dual diagnosis -- also called co-occurring disorders -- refers to the presence of both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition occurring at the same time. These conditions often fuel each other: untreated depression may drive someone to self-medicate with alcohol, while chronic stimulant use can trigger severe anxiety or psychotic symptoms. Treating only one condition while ignoring the other dramatically increases the risk of relapse and poor outcomes.
At NPZ, our clinical team is trained to identify and treat co-occurring disorders from the very first assessment. We believe that lasting recovery requires addressing the full spectrum of each client's mental and emotional health.
Conditions We Treat
Our dual diagnosis program addresses a wide range of co-occurring mental health conditions alongside substance use disorders, including:
- Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) -- persistent sadness, loss of interest, hopelessness, and low energy that often accompanies or worsens substance use
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) -- chronic excessive worry, restlessness, and tension that frequently co-occurs with alcohol and benzodiazepine dependence
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) -- trauma-related flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and avoidance behaviors that drive self-medication with drugs or alcohol
- Bipolar Disorder -- episodes of mania and depression that can trigger impulsive substance use and destabilize recovery if untreated
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) -- impulsivity and difficulty with focus that increase vulnerability to stimulant and other substance misuse
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) -- intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors that can intertwine with addictive patterns
- Personality Disorders -- borderline, narcissistic, and other personality disorders that complicate treatment and relapse prevention
Our Integrated Approach
Rather than treating addiction and mental health as separate issues, NPZ uses an integrated treatment model that addresses both conditions within a single, coordinated plan of care. This approach includes:
- Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation -- thorough assessment by a board-certified psychiatrist to diagnose all co-occurring conditions
- Coordinated treatment planning -- addiction counselors and mental health clinicians collaborate on a unified care plan
- Psychotropic medication management -- careful prescribing and monitoring of psychiatric medications alongside addiction treatment
- Evidence-based psychotherapy -- CBT, DBT, EMDR (for trauma), and other modalities delivered by licensed therapists with dual diagnosis expertise
- Ongoing reassessment -- regular evaluation of both conditions throughout treatment to adjust the care plan as needed
- Relapse and symptom prevention -- building skills to manage both addiction triggers and mental health symptoms in the long term
